Certainly getting free boxes from your friends and family, or sourcing them from supermarkets, is the cheapest option. But this does come with problems.  

Firstly, its a lot of work and time asking around, finding them, and getting them home.

However, if you hire your boxes, they will get many uses before needing to be recycled. 

If you don’t want to hire your boxes, we do encourage you to donate your boxes when you are finished so they can be reused before needing to be recycled.
